Ethics

Randall Lemin - Posted on 15 May 2010

After attending the excellent EDO workshop this afternoon ( congratulations Committee!)I asked one of the presenters about objecting to the mine by debating the ethics of it being necessary and therefore in the "public interest".A search of gold on Wikipedia shows global production exceeding demand, the historical link between using gold reserves as a hedge against extremes of global currency variations (generally man-made I should add)becoming increasingly irrelevant, and the fact that it is estimated that all the gold ever mined is still in circulation makes one question what public interest is being served by the proposed mine.In fact, the only conclusion I can come to is that gold mining's sole purpose is to produce a mineral that caters solely for man's vanity, and to make money for the owners and shareholders.Any product for which gold is essential could easily be provided for from existing stocks.
One could argue that a massage achieves the same end result, but that is hardly likely to impose the same environmental damage on the community that a goldmine will.
To see what others think, I have posted this matter on the website for the St James Ethical Centre in Sydney. It will be interesting to see the response.

Hello Randall;

I agree that GOLD is a mineral that caters for mans vanity but it has other important benefits as well like in Jewelery, Medicine, Food and Drink, Industrial and Electronics;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold

GOLD also has other side minerals such as SILVER used in Jewelery, Dentistry, Photography and electronics, Mirrors and optics, other industrial and commercial applications, Medicinal and Clothing;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver

COPPER used for Piping, Electrical applications, Architecture and industry, Household products, Biomedical applications, Aquaculture applications, Chemical applications and other Miscellanea;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper

ANTIMONY used for Medical and applications in electronics and as an alloy with other metals it is used for small arms ammunition etc;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimony

If anyone wants to have a look at other small gold mines and see what has been put in place try this one www.marthamine.co.nz. They have a good site that addresses social impact as well as environment etc.

Or one in NSW is Hillgrove near Armidale, try to google earth it and you will see how like us it is. Post code to try is 2350. There is good info ion the mine as well under Hillgrove antimony mine.

Both worth a look.

Thanks Guest,

Some great info there. Good PDF on Rehab, Closure & Bonds. I encourage others to look there for some additional info.

Its not only Gold but also Silver,Copper,Zinc,Antimony etc and who knows maybe more interesting stuff in the future, so it is very important and i strongly disagree there:-)
