Community Liaison Committee

Randall Lemin - Posted on 17 December 2009

After being to the Public Meeting and re-reading the Purpose Clause, I suggest the following change;
To effectively communicate the concerns, hopes and desires of the Majors Creek regional community to Cortona, so that co-operatively the two parties can, at a minimum maintain, but preferably enhance, the current village ambience and community spirit.
Randall

Randall, It certainly reads well and does seem to cover the purpose more specifically. I wonder what others think - I will pass this on to the liaison committee for comments.

Comments anyone?

I agree with Gordon, it looks good. We could put the change to the next open community meeting?

Back in May, I attended a Native Grasses workshop at Reidsdale in the hope that there might be something useful in it for Landcare. Rebecca Hall, the Catchment Officer in Braidwood, then lead a field trip to Majors Creek to the old mining area behind the Pub, where $100,000 has been spent developing road infrastructure/spraying etc.Rebecca summarised the results of the May field exercise, and I include the ideas suggested for your consideration.I believe Landcare could play an important role, working in conjunction with Cortona, in making this area a valuable resource for the village, thereby allowing Cortona to leave a lasting positive legacy of their time in our community.
List of Ideas
an open air art forum
sculpture site
opportunity for tourism, education, natural history
folk festival venue
native grass garden
botanical garden and walk
flying fox leading to water
naturist colony
bird haven - develop aquatic vegetation and surrounds
open air performance venue
permaculture garden
town picnic / recreation area
bushwalk / historical interpretive walk
approach Cortona Mines for $'s
approach regional universities for help in designing the quarry for alternative uses
as most ideas are dependent on voluntary labour, it is important to help volunteers to see the regional value of their efforts
Cheers
Rebecca Hall

Looks like some interesting and possibly useful suggestions, Good point re landcares involvement. What do others think?

Gordon

Definitely !
Landcare Majors Creek SHOULD be involved!
Cortona was asking for community involvement and possible projects to work on for all to benefit from.
My suggestion would be that they Purchase the Laurie Block, and hand over the land on the South side of the Creek to the community.
They then can fund rehabilitation of the riparian zone and surrounding paddocks and a walking track to the falls (also rehabilitating the lookout)
Great for public recreation, tourism, and the environment. Maybe the kids would have a local place to swim again.
Landcare could manage /Oversee the works and planning, Cortona could Pay, and fund upkeep, etc.

Post & Rail Fence

It would improve the visual affect of the village if a post and rail /or any wooden fence line was constructed from Mr Gibson's house to the Hotel on the Red Hill side of George Street before the land becomes privately owned.

Please refer to the photograph on the cover of the "Majors Creek Memories" by Ned Dunshea.

In reply to Sandra McCarron. Yes, a fence along this section of the street would be great, but, until ownership is worked out nothing can be done. If Cortona did purchase the Laurie property, this finishes at the end of George St and doesn't take in this parcel of land.

Brian McDonald

Ownership of this "strip" is messy - Looked into it for the walking track proposal through Progress. Mostly private with a tiny section of crown.
A low Hedgerow along the roadside would be achievable. Something that looked like the buxus species (traditional Hedging)but faster growing, Dwarf honeysuckle, Diosma, Spirea?

Another Idea would be to approach derelict mines dept about funding the rehab of the creek in this section to it's "former Glory".
The Mullock heap below Macdonalds is a spectacular tribute to the miners of the day, and would be a good lead in to a walking trail along the creek should Cortona purchase Lauries, and should they be willing for us to access this parcel of land.

Why don't we concentrate on the impact the mine is having on our town, rather than seeing how much we can get out of them

Yes, I agree that the primary focus of what we do should be to ensure that our town (community) is not adversely affected by the mine, But I also think that we need to look at how our community can benefit and therefore be improved from the proposed mining activities. The community of Majors Creek will be here long after the mine has gone.

I thank jelly bean 5 for making this imformation available and would support this proposition, a hedgerow would indeed be suitable as would a walking track.
Could you make known the owner of the private section so we can make an approach and get the ball rolling.
People who have extensive knowledge of the history of Majors Creek have no information as to the ownership of this land and we would all be grateful for some knowledge no matter how small.
